Autonomy

I'm a huge believer in teaching my kids to be autonomous.  Whenever possible, I give them opportunities to try doing things for themselves.  I think this will serve them well in life.  I want strong, independent, giving, loving, helpful and compassionate little people living in my home.

Somedays it takes every ounce of patience I have to allow them to try something for themselves.  I can't tell you how many times I've cleaned up spilled milk from little hands attempting to pour the heavy gallon of milk into the plastic cup.  I allow our playroom to look far from my ideal simply because I expect the kids to clean it up themselves each night.  They certainly wouldn't organize it the way I would, but they are so proud of themselves and I wouldn't dare turn down their willingness to help!

Recently, as I was making lunch, DR asked if he could make his own peanut butter & jelly sandwich.  At first I cringed because I knew this would a) make a huge mess, and b) take forever.  But, I decided it was the perfect opportunity to let his 3-year-old hands make something for himself.  Well, as you can see from the photos above, it was quite the culinary display.  Doesn't it look appetizing!??

But he sure was proud of himself.  :)
